ACER Scholarship Year 7: Entry Criteria & Exam Details
Selection Criteria
- Schools use a multi-stage process to select winners, moving beyond just the test score:
- Academic Merit (The Test): ACER reports results as percentile rankings. Highly competitive schools often look for students in the 90th percentile or higher across all sections.
- Reasoning Skills: The test focuses on higher-order thinking rather than rote memorisation. Criteria include:
- Humanities: Ability to interpret and think critically about fiction, poetry, and visual texts.
- Mathematics/Science: Quantitative problem-solving and logical reasoning (calculators are generally not permitted).
- Written Expression: Evaluated on the quality of ideas, structure, and ability to respond directly to a stimulus.
- "All-Rounder" Potential: Many schools seek students who contribute to school life through leadership, community service, music, or sports.
- Interview: Shortlisted candidates are usually invited for an interview to assess their fit with the school's values.
Written Expression (Two Tasks)
- Format: Two separate extended response tasks.
- Time: 25 minutes each (50 minutes total).
- Content: Ability to select, develop, and organise ideas. Prompts may be imaginary or based on real events, allowing for various styles like stories, letters, or arguments. Quality of content is more important than length.
Humanities – Comprehension and Interpretation
- Format: 40 - 45 Multiple-choice questions.
- Time: 40 Minutes.
- Content: Critical thinking and judgment of diverse texts, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, diagrams, and maps. Materials may relate to English, Art, History, Geography, and Social Studies.
Mathematics (Achievement and Reasoning)
- Format: 35 - 40 Multiple-choice questions.
- Time: 35 Minutes.
- Content: Quantitative problem solving, mathematical analysis, and interpretation. Assessing ability to hypothesise, apply scientific methods, and evaluate evidence. Calculators are strictly prohibited.
Test for Secondary-level Entries (Levels 1, 2, and 3)
- Level 1: For students entering Years 7 or 8 in 2027 (in Year 6 or 7 during 2026).
- Level 2: For students entering Years 9 or 10 in 2027.
- Level 3: For students entering Years 11 or 12 in 2027.
Key Details for Candidates
- Test Dates: For the Cooperative Scholarship Testing Program (CSTP), the primary test date for South Australia is 7 February 2026, while for all other states, it is 28 February 2026.
- Registration Deadlines: Applications generally close in late January or early February 2026, depending on the state and school.
- Overall Duration: The complete testing session typically runs between 2.5 to 3 hours, including registration, instructions, and short breaks between sections.
