ACER HAST Test (Year 7 Entry) Format and Timing
Reading Comprehension
- Format: 35 - 40 Multiple-choice questions.
- Time: 45 Minutes.
- Content: Analysis of diverse texts, including fiction, poetry, non-fiction prose, and visual data like charts or maps. It tests inference, vocabulary in context, and the ability to identify an author's tone or purpose.
Mathematical Reasoning
- Format: 28 - 35 Multiple-choice questions.
- Time: 40 Minutes.
- Content: Problem-solving across areas like number, measurement, space, and logical relations. Unlike standard school tests, it often includes scientific reasoning tasks such as interpreting data and evaluating hypotheses.
Abstract Reasoning
- Format: 35 - 40 Multiple-choice questions.
- Time: 30 Minutes.
- Content: Non-verbal visual puzzles that require students to recognise patterns, identify logical sequences in diagrams, and complete spatial transformations.
Written Expression
- Format: One open-response task.
- Time: 25 Minutes.
- Content: A response to a specific stimulus, which may be discursive (argumentative) or creative (narrative). Markers assess quality of thought, structure, vocabulary, and control of language.
Key Details for Candidates
- Total Duration: Approximately 2.5 hours of actual testing time, though the full session (with breaks and instructions) lasts roughly 3 to 3.5 hours.
- Mode: Entirely paper-based; students use pencils for multiple-choice and pens for writing.
- Sections: Typically consists of four sections, though schools may choose a 3-test package.
Registration & Results
- School Registration: Most schools open their internal HAST registrations in January or February 2026 for mid-year tests.
- Closing Dates: These vary but usually fall 2 to 4 weeks before the school's specific test date.
- Results Turnaround: ACER typically provides results to schools within 10 working days after receiving the completed test papers.
- Unlike standard exams, you will not receive a raw score. Instead, you get an Individual Student Report showing your child's percentile rank against the gifted cohort.
Selection Criteria
- Schools use a "triangulation" of data to make offers, meaning the test is rarely the only factor.
- ACER HAST Results (Weighted 40–60%):
- Percentiles: Schools look for students in the top 10–15% of the "high-ability" candidate pool (which is already more competitive than the general population).
- Consistency: A "superior" score in one area may not compensate for a poor result in Writing.
- Academic History: Schools review the last two years of school reports and NAPLAN results to ensure consistent high performance.
- Extracurricular Portfolio: Evidence of leadership, music, sports, or volunteering is often required to "break ties" between high-scoring candidates.
- Interview/Personal Statement: Some schools (particularly private ones) use HAST scores to shortlist candidates for an interview to assess "fit" and motivation.
