Victoria Selective School Test Format and Timing
Reasoning – Reading
- Format: 50 Multiple-choice questions.
- Time: 35 Minutes.
- Content: Tests the ability to interpret meaning, locate information, and evaluate ideas from a range of fiction and non-fiction texts.
Reasoning – Mathematics
- Format: 50 - 60 Multiple-choice questions.
- Time: 30 Minutes.
- Content: Evaluates the application of mathematical concepts to solve problems in practical or unfamiliar situations.
General Ability – Verbal
- Format: 50 - 60 Multiple-choice questions.
- Time: 30 Minutes.
- Content: Measures word-based reasoning skills, including vocabulary, word relationships, classification, and logical deduction.
General Ability – Quantitative

- Final Preference Changes: Must be completed by Friday, 26 June 2026.

Key Requirements and Selection Criteria
- Standard Merit (85% of places): The vast majority of offers are made to students who achieve the highest overall rankings in the entrance exam.
- Equity Consideration (up to 10% of places): This category is for students who are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, or whose parents/guardians hold a Commonwealth Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card. These students must still achieve a competitive standard in the exam.
- Principal’s Discretion (up to 5% of places): Each school principal can offer a small number of places based on an invitation-only process. They consider the student's exam performance alongside other factors like gender balance or leadership potential.
The "4% Rule" (School Cap)
To ensure students from across the state have access, no more than 4% of Year 8 students from any single "source" school can be accepted into the four selective high schools combined.
Performance Requirements
While there is no fixed "passing mark," candidates generally need to perform consistently well across all five sub-tests. A common benchmark for a successful offer is achieving "Superior" or high "Above Average" results across most sections.
- Gender Balance: For co-educational schools (Nossal and Suzanne Cory), a special measure may be used to maintain a relatively even balance of male and female students.
- Preferences: You can list up to three schools in order of preference. If a student qualifies for multiple schools, they will only receive an offer for their highest-ranked preference.
